Tribute & Message From The Family

SMITH, SGT. SCOTT T. Age 52 May 9, 2019. Beloved husband of Cheryl. Loving father of Jordan & Sydney. Dear son of the late Herman & the late June. Scott is also remembered by his "Hairy Kids" Hank and Gerti.

Scott will be remembered the most for his relentless sense of humor, which was a part of him that could not be quieted, even near the end of his life. He could make anyone laugh with his silliness, sarcastic comments, and observations of the world around him, usually in the form of a funny accent or dance. He was an epic storyteller. Also an avid outdoors-man, Scott loved fishing and hunting, especially among family, friends and his brothers at the police department.

Scott was a loving husband, having been married to his high school sweetheart Cheryl for 29 years, though they had been together for 35 years. Through good times and bad, they were side by side, enduring so much together and supporting each other through it all. Scott would often tell his children how much he adored their mother, and it was made more obvious simply in the way he looked at her.

He was a very supportive father to his two daughters. He never missed a moment to say how proud he was of each of them at many milestones throughout their lives, and always took the time to offer words of encouragement and wisdom with a little bit of humor thrown in, of course.

Scott was a dreamer; he loved to travel to the tropics and have adventures with family and friends, and plan the other destinations he might visit. But no matter where he was, he wanted to be at the family cabin on Lake Margrethe, in Grayling, MI. This was his favorite place in the world. There was never a dull moment during family vacations at the lake. Even just sitting on the porch or around a bonfire with his loved ones and two dogs, Hank and Gerti, that he adored very much, often the entire family would laugh until they were crying.

Although he often added humor to everything, Scott was also a deeply intelligent and sentimental person. He had a huge, open heart, and was massively loved by so many. He will be remembered forever as a kind, gentle, silly, smart, great and loving man.

Love, your daughter Sydney.

Visitation Tuesday 3-9pm. Funeral Wednesday 11:00am at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile (Shelby Township). Share memories with the family at their "On Line Guest Book" @

Condolence & Memory Journal

My dear neighbors, Bill and I are so heartbroken. I wish there were words that would take your pain and sorrow away. Scott was a good friend and I will miss our talks over the fence, sharing our veggies and his venison and fish. Please remember we are here.

Scott is my cousin. I called him Scotty. I knew him from birth. He was a chubby little guy that I used to wrestle with often. Still remember his laughter and always a jokester. I remember breaking down the bedroom door while wrestling with him and his mom scolding us holding back her laughter. My aunt June was my favorite. I miss the early years during the holidays visiting at the Smiths family. Scotty and I would often go to the woods and catch turtles and snakes. Through the years I am sorry to say I have lost touch through the years living in San Diego and raising my family here. I treasure our younger years together. I am deeply saddened of his loss and send my sincere condolences to his family Cheryl, Sydney, Jordan and Janet.

I knew Scott through a Facebook group. My husband, a cardiologist in Alabama, has an oligodendroglioma in a recurrent stage. I appreciated all my interactions with this witty encourager. In my Google drive, under my husband's name, I have medical links and several copy/paste which say "another excellent post from Scott Smith". Condolences and prayers for your dear family. Betsy Rainer

We were sadden to hear this news. It was his humor that really made a tough day bearable. His law enforcement presence always seemed to get compliance from people. Our prayers are with Cheryl, Sydney and Jordan. May you embrace Scott's goodness that it will be your guiding light as you get through this difficult time. It was an honor to work alongside Scott! Having only met Scott once, we struggle to find the words that will convey our feelings at this time. Dave and I share the love of Lake Margrethe and Grayling with your family. As I always say, "our hearts return to Grayling". It is a place of peace and tranquility. Being in law enforcement, we understand why this was a great respite for you. Members of law enforcement have a special place in our hearts as well, and I thank Scott for his dedication and service to protecting so many for so long. We wish you, Cheryl, and your daughters much peace at this time. We know that Scott fought the good fight and is at peace....

Sydney's words said it all. I will always remember Smitty for his humor. But I also know he was devoted to his family, and his brothers and sisters at the PD. He fought until the end, just like we knew he would. RIP Smitty.
