In mom's own words:
I was born to Pearl and Wilson Frye on a farm in Ringtown Valley, Pennsylvania. We had no electricity or any other conveniences (yes, I did my school homework by coal lamps). I helped plant and harvest the crops until I was 14 years old. At that time we moved into the small town of Ringtown where there were still no modern conveniences. During most of my high school years I worked in a shoe store and a women's apparel store. I graduated in 1948 from Ringtown High School after which I came to Michigan in 1951 to get a better start in life, leaving behind one sister and five brothers and, of course, my mom and dad. I started as a Kelly Girl at Holley Carburetor where I worked for nine years. I got married in 1960 and I took time off to have four babies within the first four years of my marriage. When my children were 14, 15, 16 and 17 I was hired by Kelly Services again at General Motors as an administrative assistant (secretary) and later picked up as an employee of General Motors in 1981 until I retired in 2000 at the age of 70. I might add here that in my senior year of high school the students were asked to tell for the yearbook what they'd like to pursue after they graduated and I wrote "to become a secretary at General Motors". I am proud to say that I achieved that goal.

After staying at home for about a year I took on the clerical and receptionist position for three more years at Pine Ridge of Plumbrook Retirement Community.

Another thing I reminisce about is the fact that when I was a young age I was on the radio with my sister (age 9) who played the banjo, a brother (age 8) who played the guitar, I (at age 7) played the piano, and my dad played the fiddle. We drove about 40 miles in a pickup truck every Saturday to play for 15 minutes. I must add, our sponsor was Vicks Cough Drops. My sister and I would sing and tap dance on the radio. We also played for square dances on many occasions in and around town. That was my entertainment in my youth.

I was kind of active when I came to Michigan; for example, I played golf in two leagues, I bowled in two leagues, and played softball on a league. I called it quits at age 85.

I'm also proud to say that my family joined Christ Lutheran Church in 1962 and I have been blessed ever since. During my time at CLC I served on numerous committees and sang in the choir (starting when the choir loft was in the old church building).

Condolence & Memory Journal

The service held in honor of your mom at CLC today was beautiful. I am so happy that I was a part of it. Your mom was one sweet lady who has touched many hearts. She will truly be missed but we all need to hold on to and remember those happy memories of her often. XXOO JoAnn Parobek

The Great Aunt I never knew. You sound like an awesome person who lived a very fullfilling life. I wish I could've met you but someday in heaven I will.
