Tribute & Message From The Family

TOMASI, Silla G. age 88, Sept. 2, 2019. Beloved husband of Carol (nee Jewell) for 58 years. Dearest father of Dale (Stephanie). Proud grandfather of Garnett, Sophie and Lillian. Silla served in the Air Force during the Korean War and after his service went on to get a Master's degree in Geography at Wayne State University in 1959. After his marriage to Carol Jewell and the birth of his son Dale, he was offered a position at the Unite States Census Bureau near Washington D.C. in the Geography Division. He worked there from 1966 until his retirement in 1990 achieving the rank of assistant Chief of the Geography Division. He won a silver and bronze medal for his involvement in the development of the tiger (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) system which became the base technology used by modern GPS systems used today. After retirement he moved to Michigan reuniting with his old friends "The Spartans" and family. Golf was a passion, as was cards, theater, or simply socializing with friends and family. He went out of his way to help his only son, daughter-in-law and three granddaughters who were the apple of his eye. In his last years, he continued his devotion to helping, by advising health Care beneficiaries through an organization called to the Michigan Medicaid Assistance Program. Visitation Sunday 3-9pm. Funeral Monday 11:00am at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc. (Shelby Township) 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile Rd. Tributes to the Military Order of the Purple Heart (Michigan Chapter) or Macomb County Fraser VFW Post 6691. Share memories with the family at their "On-Line Guest Book" at

Condolence & Memory Journal

Carol - You and Sil have always been a very kind and generous friends to us. We have always enjoyed how very bright and knowledgeable he was and how eager he was to share all he knew with everyone.

So very sad for you & your family, Carol. I only knew Sil a bit through our Thursday bridge but I enjoyed him & recognized what a kind person he was. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Silla gave us all individual and enthusiastic greetings when we were kids. The "Spartan" families had many get togethers and visited often. And that continued into our adult lives. Silla was always quick with a laugh and a joke. Told him he should consider doing Open Mic Night at a comedy club. It was good to see Silla back with the "Spartan" gang after his retirement. Whether it be the past Stoney Creek picnics or the more recent "Spartan" lunches, Silla seemed to be one of the main driving forces bringing people together. The "Spartans" had something special and Silla was someone special. A good friend to many. He will be missed.

Carol and Family - Silla was a wonderful man who will be missed tremendously. He always came into the Senior Center with a story to tell and a smile on his face. At 88 years old, he was still planning on volunteering his time, as he did every fall, to help seniors choose a Medicare Part D plan that would save them money. He was as sharp as a tack, caring, considerate, and clearly loved his family beyond measure. His wisdom, guidance, and friendship will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. The staff and members of the Shelby Township Senior Center.

Silla has been our friend for over a decade. He was an intelligent man who always volunteered to help us in the fall when we needed to choose our Medicare prescription drug plan. Silla was a whiz at that as well as many other things. We have enjoyed socializing with he & Carol for many fundraisers as well as just dinners for fun. We shared conservative political views. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to Carol, Dale and those beautiful granddaughters that were/are treasured by both Sill & Carol. Our hearts are heavy.
