LIKENS, PFC Kenneth William. Proud United States Marine who gave his life for his nation on November 22, 1943. Age 20. Beloved son of the late William and Gladys Dolan. Dear brother of the late Jack Dolan and the late Marjorie Dolan, who died January 27 of this year and never lost hope that her brother would be found and returned home. Survived by his nephew Kenneth Dolan (Mei Shu), 2 great-nieces, Ethel Hong Badawi (Omar) and Lisa Hong Hoffman) as well as several loving cousins and extended family members. In November 1943, Likens was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, which landed against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands, in an attempt to secure the island. Over several days of intense fighting at Tarawa, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors were killed and more than 2,000 were wounded, while the Japanese were virtually annihilated. Likens died on the third day of the battle, Nov. 22, 1943. Interment with full military honor rendered by the United States Marine Corps will be at 1pm on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.
